Marriage is an important social custom and legal practice in the Cheltian Nation. It constitutes the union of two people.
Marriage: The Rite of Union The Rite of Union is administered by a lower-ranking Char. It is a religious ceremony where the union of two people in marriage is formally concluded and recognised by the Nation. Children born out of wedlock are illegitimate and relegated to Lell caste.
Caste Status Caste Status may be conferred on someone when they marry someone of another caste, though this precludes their children from being born into their original caste. If parents of a child have different castes, their child must have a caste chosen for them by the parents or the Char.
Polygamy It is permitted for Cheltians of any sex to marry any number of other people, though because of the inherent social obligations and legal issues involved (relating to divisions of property), monogamous or semi-monogamous marriages are most common.
