The Barrtip was established as the official currency of the nation by the Order-in-Council Providing for National Symbols, which specifically stated that this new coin does not interfere with existing bartering arrangements, which was formerly the only economic system. The coins are produced by certain privileged and experienced members of the Smith caste (Shirn), and are handled by the Char. There are three grades of Barrtip, gold, silver and copper. Their relative worth is 1 Gold:70 silver:1400 copper. The Gold Barrtip front face depicts a pattern design which varies from mint to mint, while the back face shows the Barr's silhouette. The Silver Barrtip, which has a hole in the middle, shows the outline of a religious mask on its front face, usually a Char's mask, though it can vary. The back face shows the initials of various castes: Barr at the top, Lell at the bottom, Murn on the left and Shirn on the right. The Copper Barrtip displays the two mountains between which the nation was founded, Asphodel and Chenrezig on the front and back respectively. As mentioned, these coins may vary in design, as well as shape and composition depending on available materials and the skill of the Shirn who made it. They are used mostly for local trade, and are authenticated by the Char, and are mostly used by the Murn (merchants). Their use has most grown in the Far Char Lodgment where the market for international trade is blossoming.
